I am able to watch any format movie (including internet feeds) over my PS3 (the server will covert it when needed to MPEG2) and the quality is great. Apart from occasional error messages and not being able to find the content, it works just great. Sorry, ucsdgemini, I have no answer, since I am here to find one myself.

It works with all major operating systems that includes Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. After a few restarts it works just fine all the time I watch the movie. Universal Media Server, a DLNA compatible UPnP media server, was initially based on PS3 media server. The firewall is out of question, because if it was I would not be able watching my movies at all.

It is pretty frustrating to get downstairs to my PC every time I have these errors (and accordingly no files/folders visible) in order to restart the server or service. I keep getting these errors almost every time I am to watch a movie on my PS3 from the server. No movies or music without DLNA 4 errors. The only thing my PS3 can see are pictures. Make sure your PS3 is securely connected to the same network (Ethernet or wireless) as your computer. I spent the last 4 hours rebuilding my TVersity database.
